 How Hip Hop Changed The World (pic: C4) THIS probably isn’t the best week for Channel 4 to be launching its Summer Street Season( after the recent riots), but hey ho. Idris Elba, star of Luther and The Wire is striding across a roof top in a flapping coat and flat cap as he counts down Hip Hop’s 50 defining moments. Better known for his acting than his music, in his other life, “Big Driis” is a DJ and MC who produced a track for Jay-Z’s American Gangster album.Dismissed in the early 80s as a passing fad – “disco with talky bits” – hip-hop has since sprayed its tag across popular culture, right down to Britain’s graffiti-inspired logo for the 2012 Olympics. This marathon salutes the pioneers of sampling, scratching and break beats from DJ Kool Herc to the lyrical gymnastics of Eminem and Snoop Dogg’s stag-do song for Prince William.
