Police: Surprise nurse solicited sex with minor over Internet

A nurse from Surprise was arrested Monday in Phoenix at a residence where he believed he was going to meet an underage girl for sex, according to court documents.

The Phoenix police chatted with Richard Sangalang, 39, over the Internet on three different occasions in February, most recently on Feb. 23, according to the statement.

During the chats police posing as an underage girl received pictures of Sangalang's face, his vehicle and requests for different kinds of sex.

After the arrest, which occurred near McDowell Road and Central Avenue, Sangalang admitted to authorities he had knowingly solicited sex with a minor and sent the pictures, according to the court documents.

Sangalang was taken to Madison Street Jail Clinic near Jefferson Street and 1st Avenue. He faces three counts of soliciting sex with a minor.

The pictures and Sangalang's computer were kept by authorities as evidence, court documents said.

Sangalang worked as a licensed nurse practitioner with adults for five years at Banner Estrella Medical Center near Thomas Road and the Loop 101, said Jeff Nelson a spokesman for Banner Health. During the investigation into the allegations, Sangalang will not be scheduled to work any shifts, Nelson said.

Phoenix police Sgt. Trent Crump said the Arizona Internet Crimes against Children Task Force does not start conversations with would-be sex solicitors; they wait for the adult to initiate conversation.

"We are not luring people into something they were not predisposed to do," Crump said.
